Coming Soon – Toyota Entune Replaced With Intel Technology
Toyota’s next generation of in-vehicle entertainment, navigation and communication systems may be powered by Intel according to a recent official announcement.

Toyota's Entune system could be on the way out replaced by new Intel technology.
The memorandum of understanding between Toyota and Intel indicates that both companies will engage in research to upgrade and replace the current information and communication systems used by the world’s second leading automaker. The intended result could be similar to the Sync partnership that rival companies Ford and Microsoft forged in the mid-2000s.
Toyota has already taken the first step towards leading the in-vehicle infotainment revolution with Entune, a system which connects Toyotas with smartphones to run a few applications such as the Pandora Internet radio. It’s not clear whether Entune will be shelved in favor of an Intel-powered new system, but the functionality promises to be far more advanced.
Intel is no stranger to the automotive industry. Its Atom chips are already present in some BMW and Mercedes Benz vehicles, and it is involved in similar research efforts with Korean automakers.
The chipmaker’s research partnership with Toyota isn’t limited to connecting vehicles to smartphones and running a few apps.
Future research will look into:
- Vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems
- Improved real-time traffic
- Accident data reporting
The future generation of multimedia in-vehicle systems promises to be both exciting and meaningful. Streaming mp3 files from an iPod is neat, but to ask your Toyota about road conditions ahead, or to instruct it to send a message to loved ones about being late due to heavy traffic is substantive. As the world’s second largest automaker, Toyota has a lot riding on technology and innovation.

Since intel is a manufacturer of processors and chipsets, I don’t see that this indicates any major difference between current “entune” and later ones with intel chips. The current software must simply be recompiled for the x86 processor architecture (they’re probably using a processor with ARM or MIPS architecture currently) in order to run on intel chips. This is something that a user of the system WON’T EVEN BE AWARE OF.
Somebody – Interesting point. From the tone of the press releases, we assumed that this represented a change in direction…but perhaps they’re just associating the Intel brand with Toyota in the hopes that will boost the system’s credibility. Good comment – thank you.

My hope is that Microsoft is COMPLETELY pushed out of Toyota. If not, I won’t be buying another one. I don’t buy anything with Microsoft in it if in any way possible. And since there are other car companies that do not include Microsoft in the mix, I have choices.
