Tacoma Cleans Up In Canada

Tacoma Takes ecoEnergy Vehicle Award Away From Ford

Natural Resources Canada, a government entity tasked with promoting sustainable development and green energy, recently announced the 2011 winners of the ecoEnergy vehicle award. The ecoEnergy award recognizes the most fuel-efficient vehicles in multiple categories, including the broad “Pickup Truck” category.

Tacoma Fuel Economy in Canada

The Tacoma has won the ecoEnergy award, seizing it from last year’s winner the Ford Ranger. Interestingly enough, the Natural Resources Canada website shows that the Tacoma 4cylinder 5-speed manual tested at an incredible 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway!

Of course, as any Canadian will tell you, mpg stands for “miles per imperial gallon” – and an imperial gallon is almost exactly 20% bigger than a US gallon…which means the Canadian fuel economy figures should be discounted by about 20% to be comparable to US figures.

Still, that’s 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway…definitely not bad.

Tacoma, Tundra Canada’s Best Resale Value In Trucks

The Automotive Leasing Guide (ALG) released the Canadian version of their resale value awards last week, and the Tacoma and Tundra won the best resale awards for the compact and full-size truck categories respectively.

Both the Tundra and the Tacoma have won numerous resale value awards over the last few years, but because ALG values are used by banks for official lease calculations, they tend to have the most impact on vehicle financing.

The Tundra and the Tacoma both enjoy class-leading resale value because:

  1. Toyota doesn’t offer massive cash rebates on either product, despite the fact that many competitors offer large cash rebates on a regular basis. Ford offered $7500 cash back on the F150, for example, late last year. This isn’t to say that Toyota doesn’t offer incentives – they do – but these incentives are usually lease or financing offers that don’t automatically erode resale.
  2. Toyota has a strong certified pre-owned program, which makes it easier for Toyota dealers to re-sell used Toyota products. Easier resale means higher resale values.
  3. Consumers appreciate Toyota quality and reliability

Bottom Line: It’s good to be a Tacoma owner – especially in Canada.
