Jeep Is Building A Pickup – Probable Specs

PickupTrucks.com, FourWheeler.com, and Automotive News (sub.) are all reporting that Jeep is going to begin selling a pickup-truck version of the Jeep Wrangler in the next two years.

This truck may be loosely based on the 2005 Jeep Gladiator concept shown below.

Jeep Wrangler Pickup

Jeep's 2005 Gladiator concept vehicle may be the blueprint for Jeep's new pickup

Based on a conversation with a Jeep dealer who attended Tuesday’s unveiling, here’s what we’re predicting the new Jeep’s specs will be:

  • The pickup will have Jeep’s new Pentastar V6, which is rumored to have 275+ hp.
  • The pickup will be available with both a manual transmission and an automatic, both 6 speeds
  • The new pickup should get 20mpg or better on the highway
  • We’re told that payload and tow ratings will likely be very similar to the Honda Ridgline / Toyota Tacoma, only likely a little lower. Think 1200 lbs payload and 4k – 5k towing at max.

Considering this Jeep pickup will be based on the Wrangler Unlimited, it will have an upgraded interior and a nice list of features.

Pricing, seating, and the name of this new truck are anyone’s guess at this point. However, we think this Jeep intends to fill the same slot that is currently occupied by Ford’s Ranger (which is due to disappear soon). If so, you can expect rear seating will be limited and that prices will range between $25k-$35k, depending on features.

Comments? Will the public buy a pickup with less capability than the Tacoma for roughly the same amount of money?

I have high hopes for it. I’m hoping that they will use the beefier J8 frame and perhaps make it look more like Nukizer 715 concept.

I see this to be no different than the Hummer truck. Also to me this is a waste of their money. Just after being bailed out they are going to venture into the truck business? Hopefully they are on steady ground.

Kamil – I think it’s going to be a Wrangler with a bed, but I’m guessing that it will be tough enough to do some light work…sort of like a Tacoma. From what I’ve read on other blogs, Jeeps biggest plan for this pickup are in China.

Mickey – Interesting…I wonder if the public will see it that way as well. Supposedly, the money to build this thing has come from Fiat, but I think you are wise to question the financial impact. Chrysler isn’t making much money right now.

Looks good in my opinion. However, the price range of 25k to 35k is too high. I beleive sells would be better if they could keep the price between 18k and 27k. I also would like to see a diesel version as an option.

Looks like an enthusiasts truck. I think it’s a dumb move

looks like the hummer truck? think i’ll wait for the mahindra to replace my hhr and keep my tundra too.

Sorry but IMO the truck is ugly. I liked the OLD Jeep trucks that were simple and boxy. This is just…UGLY! I don’t care what it can do compared to the other Jeeps in the lineup.

Gerald – There will definitely be a diesel version, but it won’t be available in North America (you can thank the EPA and your congressman for that). As for the price, I hear you, but there’s no chance that a pickup will cost less than the base Wrangler (they start at $22k).

Steve H – That’s an opinion shared by a few people, but I think the death of the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado leave a gap for an “American” compact truck option. Still, you’re in good company. My opinion? It’s a miracle Jeeps sell at all. It’s a fairly impractical vehicle that’s loud, rides poorly, and isn’t particularly safe or efficient…adding a pickup bed helps it make more sense (at least to me).

Danny – Jeep would say that Hummer’s truck looked like them! 🙂

TXTee – That image is just a concept, but the new version may be close. The Jeep look isn’t for everyone.

I like every other Jeep’s aesthetics in the newest lineup even though it takes a bit of time to get used to the four door version of the Wrangler. Hopefully this concept gets some tweaks to change my mind.

I LOVE IT Cant wait to get one.

I love it too. Anybody heard of the scrambler/CJ8? This is a new version of it. I’m glad to see it back. All you guys on here hating on Jeeps, talking about ride bad and waste of money and all that nonsense. You’ll probably never get it while you’re out driving your little smart cars and foreign hybrids. Jeep won the ww2 because we went places and did things they couldnt. We still do. Dont worry though, most of us will be happy to pull you out of the ditch when we’re driving past and see you stuck!

AMF – Seriously? Referencing WWII to prove that the Jeep is the best? Anything you want to talk about in *this* century?

For the record, I think the Jeep pickup truck is a great idea. In my opinion, it makes a hell of a lot more sense than a Jeep Wrangler. But then I’m not driving around looking for people to pull out of ditches, so maybe I don’t see the value.

I would call a Wrangler a “mountain convertible” – not terribly practical or logical, but definitely fun. Still…how does someone justify spending so much money on such an impractical vehicle considering a pickup will do nearly as much and also has room for cargo?

Seriously, I don’t get it. A Tacoma makes so much more sense.

It’s a great news, and I want to know whether the upcoming 2012 Jeep Gladiator is coming out in 4-door pickup form or not?

Houseboats in Echuca are ideal houseboats which have the accommodations
that allow you to relax and explore the lake with all the
comforts of any regular home. After users select their avatar they’re transported into their apartment.
But have you ever thought about living in your boat full time.
