The 2012 Dakar Rally is happening right now with three Toyota Tacoma teams racing.

With the first of 16 stages completed, the 2012 edition of the Dakar Rally is fully underway. The Car category is where all the entrants are placed and truck is used to define a full-size commercial vehicle in the rally. The majority of the entrants are Volkswagen Amoraks and Toyota Hiluxes, there are also two Mitsubishi L200s and two Honda Ridgelines. The Toyota Tundras, Toyota Tacomas and Nissan Frontiers are in their own teams.

The 2012 Dakar Rally takes place in some of the toughest areas of South America and threads through the countries of Argentina, Chile and Peru. Comprehensive data on all the action, teams and live updates can be found on the Rally’s website at Dakar.com. You can also watch episodes on the new NBC Sports Network.

So far much of the best racing has come from the team of custom Mini Countrymans, the Hummer team and a large amount of teams using Amorak turbo-diesels. Especially impressive is a huge commercial truck called Tatras that has been able to blast through much of the extreme terrain that the smaller vehicles have had to overcome. The Rally ends on January 16th in Lima, Peru.

At the time of this writing, the Rally is now in stage 5 and there are several Toyotas near the top of the rankings, many of them Hiluxes. The current highest ranking for a Tacoma is 63.
